CINE PERU-CT |
Carla Salinas is a Peruvian filmmaker with 15 years of experience in the communications industry and founder of CINE PERU, a non-profit organization dedicating to promote the art of film making in CT. Throughout her experience, Carla has participated in the creation of several Peruvian movies and advertisements that had become trendy in the Latin American industry.
Carla earned a film degree at the Charles Chaplin Communications Institute in Lima-Peru. Since then, she has integrated her education with additional courses from the New York Film Academy and even took contemporary dance classes in Holland. Additionally, Carla has recently been awarded a filmmaking scholarship at the Escuela International de San Antonio de Los Baños in Cuba.
Carla comes from Puno and Arequipa ancestry, states located in the southern Peruvian Andes. She currently lives in Stratford-CT with her husband and enjoys spending time with her nieces and nephews.
At an early age, Carla felt a deep passion for movie making. Through her high school life, she knew she wanted to pursue higher education in filmmaking.
“I have always been passionate about cinema, at school, they made us take the vocational tests, and my results always proved that I was to study art or writing.”
Her desire to become a professional in communications, marked a difference within students her age, “My friends were scared to face life as an adult because they didn’t know what to do, but I always knew what I wanted to be”.
Among Carla’s most remarkable works, we can find a promo ad for MARCA PERU, called "Loreto-Italia", which focused on creating awareness within the Peruvian community living outside the country. Carla became part of that well-recognized team of producers and was part of the creation of the ad that wrote history in the advertisement industry in Peru.
“I was part of the production team of MARCA PERU for the advertising of "Loreto - Italy" which was an ad campaign that PROMP PERU did to promote Peruvian culture. The objective was to raise awareness that if you are Peruvian living in another country, then you are an ambassador of our culture.”
The ad became trendy around the world, and soon it was part of the top best advertisement in history. Carla has also worked as a production manager for the documentary of Peruvian soccer player Paolo Guerrero, among other popular films such as “Avenida Larco” and thousands of TV ads.
Carla has also made collaborations with international producers.

“I feel that all of my works have been very significant. I had the blessing to work with teams that are experts in this field; the best in the Peruvian communication industry. Every audiovisual product is the effort of a team and not of a single person”.
Carla arrived in the united states in December 2019. Missing her home country and having free time in her hands, she thought that the community had to watch what the Latino films have to offer. That is how she started CINE PERU, a non-profit organization that focuses on showing the beauty of Peruvian filmmaking seeking to start a dialog with people from different cultural backgrounds and languages to appreciate culture and film.
“CINE PERU is the name of this non-profit project. I came up with this initiative because I needed to share the Peruvian culture to help people revalue indigenous traditions, and show everyone the beauty of Peruvian films. I also want to create a space for conversations to hear different perspectives on how people see the culture. This project seeks to generate a multicultural exchange so that people can then discuss whether they sympathize with the story or not”.
CINE PERU has gotten the attention of diverse cultural organizations throughout the state of Connecticut and is operating in collaboration with the Peruvian Consulate in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
“At CINE PERU, we make presentations to educational and cultural organizations. We want to get in touch with the entities that want to collaborate and thus provide cultural activities to the community. All CINE PERU events are free”.
With the expansion of the digital age, film creation has become easier. Like in other industries, technology has completely changed the film industry – from the ways movies get made, and the editing process, through the ways audiences watch the final product.
"Filmmaking in Peru has grown enormously. There are many productions created annually. Thanks to digital technology, Peru makes 20 movies yearly, and that allows many people to send a message and tell stories that show what Peru is about."
Proud of her accomplishments, and of the reception her project has gotten, Carla is hosting her third event at the Luce Hall at Yale University in New Haven.
“Our next function is on February 25th at 7 PM at the Luce Hall auditorium at Yale University, in collaboration with the McMillan "Center of American and Ibero-American Studies". We will be presenting “CLIMAS”, which is a work of Enrica Pérez. Without her, we could not make this event possible. Everyone is welcome to this free event. Other upcoming events are in June at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum in Hartford, and in July at the Hartford Public Library in Downtown.
"CLIMAS" portrays the stories of 3 different women from different ages and backgrounds. Each woman comes from the Peruvian diversed regions, coast, Andes, and the Amazon. The film shows cyclically and linearly the physical and sexual development that women go through and how society pressures them to become a stereotype of what women in Latin countries should be.
“This film talks about the experiences of women, it is a film created by women, made by a mixed team but mostly women, that's why we talk about female experiences”.
