On August 16, the Puerto Rican soccer team visited Hartford for a friendly match with the local Hartford Athletic. As expected, the Hispanic community of Hartford, organized to receive the athletes, in a "Meet and Greet" in “El Poeta de los Sandwiches" on Hartford's Pratt Street.
Hartford’s Mayor Luke Bronin, made an appearance, with a proclamation certificate to the Puerto Rican national team, for their Hispanic ties with the Hartford community. In his attempt to establish an approach with Puerto Ricans, the mayor expressed his feelings with some words in Spanish, which were well received by those present. “We are proud to have them in Hartford. I proclaim that sporting events are supported in our city, and I express our sincere gratitude and welcome the Puerto Rican team to our city. ” The local press took data from the historical moment and was fascinated with the charisma and youth of the soccer team.
The public ardent by the excitement took pictures of the team and accompanied them to the Puerto Rican restaurant to exchange good memories with the “seleccion” and delight the sandwiches prepared by Puerto Rican hands.
The following day, the Puerto Rican team faced the local Hartford Athletic team at the Dillon Stadium, in an emotional opening ceremony, which was attended by political authorities, and a vastly Hispanic public, who predicted a victory for the visiting team. However, the Hartford team beat up the "Huracan Azul" with a blunt 5 to 1 score, leaving the Puerto Rican public disappointed. However, after the defeat, the Hispanics left the stadium happy to have had the opportunity to share pleasant moments with their team.
Despite the pressure of having two beloved teams at home, Hartford Athletic and Hurricane Azul fans "La Hinchada" kept singing, dancing and throwing their good vibes to both teams, staying until the end of the game to exalt the winning team. Marketing director of the Hartford Athletic, John Ponziani, stated in an interview to BOCETO MEDIA, that the club will continue to bring more Latino teams to re-establish the links that unite Hispanics with soccer, and thus stimulate the passion for this sport in the Connecticut communities.
